Face book

Definition: FaceBook is a social networking site, where people have their own area on the site, which can then be shared with other people with some common interests (e.g. same school, town, workplace, hobby etc). FaceBook appears to have high levels of responsibility in terms of the content that it allows, and it allows people to decide how much or little of their information is available to the wider community.

Use in Education: This site could easily be used to create a portfolio especially in areas such as art, as you can upload images into the site.

Fleck

Definition: Fleck allows you to add notes to a website, save these notes, and then send them to someone else. It is similar to taking a magazine article or a book, and making notes on post it notes and then sending these to someone

Use in Education: This could easily be used by students as a form of revision, or as a task set by a tutor for students to find information, and then comment on it.

Link to Example: Here is an example taken from the Fleck Website

Flickr

Definition: Flickr is a Web 2.0 facility where photos can be stored and shared online. The benefits are that the photos are easily organised and searched.

Use in Education: Flickr provides powerful image management capabilities, which can be useful for educators if there organisations do not have such facilities. Also you can comment on other peoples pictures - so a tutor could post pictures on a topic (that they have taken so no copyright issues) - and then ask the class to comment on the pictures!

Another useful feature of Flickr, is you can create labels on the image - these appear as outlines of rectangles, which when you hover the mouse over it, shows gives you some information on that part of the image.

Link to Example: Click on the image below, to go to Flickr, and see how this image has been converted into a crude but effective teaching resource
